Philanthropist gifts record M to UM Children’s Hospital

The University of Maryland Children’s Hospital received a $50 million gift from philanthropist Tom Golisano — the largest gift in the hospital’s history.”Children’s health has always been a priority for me, and it has been deeply rewarding to see how the Golisano Children’s Hospitals are making a profound impact on the communities they serve,” Golisano said. “I am fortunate to be able to help others in this way, and I’m looking forward to seeing what these hospitals can achieve together. Also, I plan to continue making similar transformative gifts that will strengthen this new alliance.”Through this gift, the University of Maryland will launch gene therapy services for children, enhance neonatal intensive care and pediatric intensive care units, and create a new child-centered space for pediatric patients.Other goals include expanding multi-site studies on rare diseases, CAR T-cell therapy and evidence-based treatments while also advancing research on social determinants of health and community-driven care.”To be able to work with The Golisano Foundation and look toward the future as to how we develop care and network and provide the highest level to the patients that we serve, which come from Baltimore and the entire state of Maryland and surrounding areas, it’s just an overwhelming gift,” said Monika Bauman, director of nursing for the University of Maryland Medical Center.”When you think about the impact of philanthropy, you think about generational impact because that’s what this gift is,” said Mohan Suntha, president and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical System.The University of Maryland Children’s Hospital was one of six facilities to receive gifts from Golisano, for whom the children’s hospital is being renamed in his honor. The children’s hospital is a 90-bed facility with more than 3,000 annual admissions and 118,000 outpatient visits.Golisano is the founder of Paychex Inc., a human resource company for small to medium-sized businesses. His philanthropic contributions to education, hospitals — including multiple children’s hospitals across the country that bear his name and numerous other organizations — exceed $1 billion.
